Daytona Beach tourism and hotel operators are worried that high gas prices will keep families anchored at home this Memorial Day weekend, so they are offering some unusual incentives to encourage travel. These packages are aimed at luring locals who don't want to drive far or hope to ease the pain of filling their tank.
For example, Panama City Beach resorts are handing out gas cards as part of a "Giving Tanks" promotion, and Daytona Beach holidays and hotels are offering rebates to "Fuel Your Passion for Travel." Gas prices typically rise during the summer due to increased demand for vacation driving, at the same time that refineries switch over to a more expensive summer fuel blend. Prices this year are far higher than last, which has lead to a decrease in expected road trips in Florida and nationwide.
